The Highest level of Women’s Polo Around the world

The Argentine Women’s Open Polo Championship is the only Women’s Open in the world that starts at 4 goals handicap and above, establishing a minimum level that defines the standard of the tournament. In this sense, it follows the same mentality as the Argentine Open Polo Championship, where entry starts at 6 goals and up, setting a clear threshold for elite competition. Since its inaugural edition in 2017, the Women’s Open has reached its ninth edition, bringing together players from 4 goals to the highest level in the sport. It is within this structure that the level of the game is sustained, shaped by players capable of performing at speed, precision, and consistency. Over the years, the tournament has seen a fluctuation in the number of participating teams. It began with six teams in 2017, followed by four in 2018, returning to six teams in 2019 and 2020, and reaching its highest participation with eight teams in 2021 and 2022. More recently, the number has adjusted to five teams in 2023, four in 2024, and three teams in 2025.
The level is reflected in the players who compete, including names such as Candelaria Fernández Araujo, Maitena Marre, and Mia Cambiaso, alongside international figures like Nina Clarkin, Hazel Jackson, and Hope Arellano. Many of these players also compete in the Opens such as the U.S. Open Women’s Polo Championship, the British Ladies Open Polo Championship, and the Open de France Féminin, while some also compete alongside men in high-goal polo in the United States and the United Kingdom. To compete at this level requires more than skill alone. A strong sponsor and a high-quality string of horses are essential. At the Argentine Women’s Open, being well mounted is a defining factor — the depth and quality of horses are fundamental to sustaining the level of play.
